You must be 18 years of age or older to participate in this study.
Purpose. You are invited to participate in our study, Survey of Research/Scientific Misconduct. The purpose of this research is to study the problem of research/scientific misconduct in institutions. We are interested in whether during your career you have observed or heard about research/scientific misconduct in your workplace and your thoughts about what should be done.
Your participation. We welcome anyone 18 years or older who speaks English.
Your rights. Your decision to participate in this study is entirely voluntary. This means you may decide at any time to withdraw. Your decision to participate or to withdraw will not affect any relationship you may have with the University of Alberta. If you do not wish to submit your responses, simply click the browser page closed. Should you wish to withdraw your responses after submitting them, e-mail Dr. W. Andrew Harrell (aharrell@ualberta.ca) with the approximate time and date that you submitted them, and he will remove your responses.
Anonymity and Confidentiality. Your responses will be anonymous. Your name will not appear on the questionnaire or be associated with your responses in any way. Only Dr. Harrell and his research associates will have access to your responses except where required by ethical or institutional obligations to report academic misconduct. Accordingly, we ask that you not disclose specific details of academic misconduct in your responses to questions in this survey. You may obtain a summary of results by e-mailing Dr. Harrell (aharrrell@ualberta.ca). The results of this study may be presented at scientific conferences or published in scientific journals. No individual results will be released; only grouped (aggregated) data will be presented. The data will be safely stored by Dr. Harrell for at least seven years.
Benefits and risks. A personal benefit of completing the questionnaire is that it may stimulate your thinking about the problem of research/scientific misconduct. This research will contribute to the advancement of our understanding of the problem and what can be done about it.
There is no known risk to you as a participant. You do not have to answer any questions, especially those you believe may make you uncomfortable, unsettled or upset.
